Jesup, February 7. – The matrimonial fever is raging to an alarming extent in our little town just now. Dr. Lester has just returned with his lovely bride from the same city. Peter Westberry and Miss Lula Parker were married yesterday, and Mr. Twiggs of Augusta, and Miss Katie G. Raiford, and Steve Carter and Miss Eliza Smith are to be married on the 10th.

Blackshear. Mr. Peter Westberry and family, the former having been confined to his bed for several weeks with a severe case of rheumatism, has moved his family to Jesup, where it is hoped a speedy recovery will be the result.

Final Rites Held For Mrs. Westberry – Funeral services were held last Wednesday morning for Mrs. Lula A. Westberry, 87, widow of Peter Westberry, who died Monday afternoon, November 24, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. A. L. Bunch, Savannah, after an illness of three weeks. Mrs. Westberry was a native of Jesup, but had lived in Savannah for 20 years. Services were conducted in the chapel of Irvine Henderson Funeral Home in Savannah, at 9 o’clock, by Rev. Searcy S. Garrison, D.D., pastor of Bull Street Baptist Church. Burial was in the Jesup Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Richard Milikin, Ben Hopps, Don Surrency, Gus Carter, Harry Burns and H. J. Westberry.

K. F. Westberry Dies Suddenly. Kenlock Faulkner Westberry, formerly of Jesup, died suddenly in Augusta, Ga., where he had made his home for the past twenty-five years. Mr. Westberry was a native of Wayne County and was 54 years of age, but when quite young moved to Augusta, where he served various railroads in that city as ticket agent. Funeral services were held in Augusta, Monday afternoon at four o’clock. His survivors include his wife, Mrs. Flossie Westberry, a son, K. F., Jr., of Augusta; his mother, Mrs. Lula Westberry, of Savannah, three brothers, J. T., J. P., and C. S. Westberry, all of Savannah; and a sister, Mrs. A. L. Bunch, of Savannah.

Late Hero Born in Jesup. Pfc. Raymond T. Westberry was fatally wounded in action on the night of January 2, 1944 at Cape Gloucester, New Britain, was reared in Jesup where he has a large number of friends. He attended the Wayne County High School. His father, J. T. Westberry, of Savannah, is also well-known in Jesup, having been born in this city. His grandfather was the late “Uncle Peter” Westberry, who was for many years a popular member of the personnel of the A.C.L. employees in Jesup. His grandmother resides in Savannah with her son. Private Westberry was buried with full military honors. Lt. Col. T. S. Hughes of the Marine Corps praised him for his courage and devotion to duty as worthy of the finest tradition of the Marine Corps.

Peterson-Westberry. Jesup, Ga., October 16. – (Special.) – In the presence of relatives and friends Miss Mildred Wyman Peterson, the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Peterson, and Mr. Clifford Smith Westberry, both of this city, were quietly married Monday evening at the Methodist church. Promptly at 7 o’clock the bride entered with her sister, the maid of honor, Miss Bessie Peterson. Mendelssohn’s wedding march was played by Mrs. J. F. Breen. The bride was met at the altar by the groom and his best man, Mr. L. Grady McMillan. Rev. N. T. Pafford performed the marriage ceremony most impressively. The bride is well known in Jesup, and during her residence here has made many friends. The groom is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Westberry and has many friends among his business and social associates who will extend congratulations. Mr. and Mrs. Westberry left immediately after the ceremony for Savannah, Augusta and Atlanta, where they will visit relatives and on their return go into their new home on Macon street.

RIDGELAND – Clifford Smith Westberry, 75, of Ridgeland, husband of Lucy Baldwin Westberry, died Friday at his residence . Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Sauls Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Westberry was born March 28, 1919, in Savannah, a son of Clifford S. Westberry and Mildred Peterson Westberry. He was a graphic artist and a Methodist. He was a US Army veteran of World War II and Korea and was awarded three purple hearts, a silver star and a bronze star. He served on the staff of Gen. Eisenhower and was held as a prisoner of war by the Japanese in the Philippines. Surviving are two sons, Johnny Westberry and Anthony Westberry of Ridgeland; two daughters, Melody Westberry of Charleston and Angelia Brown of Ridgeland, and four grandchildren.

  1. Clifford Smith Westberry, Jr. was my father. His mother was Mildred Peterson. My first name is Mildred as well. I have never seen a picture of my grandmother and was hoping someone may have one. Thank you in advance.

  2. Ray Alvesta Westberry (Mrs. A.L. Bunch) was my Grand Mother. As sweet a woman that has ever lived. My mother was Margaret Bunch Ball.
    One item that has always confused me is the 1880 census that lists Lula A. Parker as Lula Johnson. Any ideas on this?
