Hires-Westberry – Of much interest in this section is the marriage of Miss Alma Hires, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Hires of Odum, to Mr. Lankford Westberry, also of Odum, which was solemnized quietly at the home of the bride’s parents Sunday afternoon. Rev. C. F. Burke of Odum performed the ceremony in the presence of the immediate family and a few close relatives and friends. After the ceremony a formal reception was held, after which the young couple left for a short wedding trip. On their return they will make their home near Odum. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Westberry of Odum.

Pfc. Harold F. Westberry, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Westberry of Odum, has been serving with the medical detachment at Camp Gordon for the past seven months. During this time Pfc. Westberry received his diploma in the Neuro-psychiatric Enlisted Course. Pfc. Westberry is now in Ft. Lewis, Washington, awaiting overseas assignment. His wife, the former Miss Bertie Elliott will be at home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Elliott of Odum.

Pauline Elliott Martin, 68, of Jesup, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, after a short illness. The Wayne County native was a member of the Jesup First Freewill Baptist Church, was retired from the Wayne County School System and was a homemaker. Survivors are her husband, Eldridge C. Martin of Jesup; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Jimmy Thompson and Shirley and Wally Hall, all of Jesup; her mother, Alma Hires Westberry of Jesup; two sisters, Mary Ellen Cooksey of Jesup and Audrey Faye Beaver of Mableton; three brothers, Winton L. Westberry, Sr. of Jesup, Larry Westberry of Odum and Kenneth Westberry of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jason Sikes, Kayla Hall, Jeremy Thompson and Jared Thompson; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. from the Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Evors and the Rev. Walter Shuman officiating. Interment will be in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be her nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the Adult Sunday School Class of Jesup First Freewill Baptist Church. Private Winton L. Westberry, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Westberry of 281 11th Street, Jesup, has been assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 1st Training Regiment at Fort Jackson for eight weeks of basic infantry training. He will spend eight weeks learning the fundamentals of being a soldier. This includes classroom lectures in such things as military courtesy, first aid, and combat field problems involving the use of the M-1 rifle, which he will learn to fire on various ranges. After eight weeks of training at the U.S. Army Training Center – Infantry, the trainee is given about 14 days leave. He may return to Fort Jackson for eight weeks more of infantry training or he may be assigned to one of the many Army schools. Basic training is required of each man coming into the Army. Fort Jackson is one of the Army’s largest training installations. Primarily an infantry training post, the Fort also offers schooling in specialties associated with an infantry division, as well as in combat tactics.

Ken R. Westberry Completes Phone Course. Private Kenneth R. Westberry, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lankford F. Westberry, Route 3, Box 182, Jesup, completed an eight-week telephone switchboard operator course at the Army Southeastern Signal School, Ft. Gordon, October 14. During the course, he was trained to operate the complex central office telephone switchboards used by the Army. He also learned the various communications systems of the Army and was taught to operate manual telephone office sets. His wife, Hazel, lives at 1334 Laura Street, Jacksonville, Fla.

Miss Westberry, Mr. Cooksey Pledge Vows in Odum Church. The Odum Churchof God was the setting for the nuptial rites of Miss Mary Ellen Westberry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lankford Westberry and Ronald Lewis Cooksey, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Cooksey. The wedding took place April 22 with the Rev. M. B. Norris officiating. Native palms formed the background for the arrangement of white gladioli and chrysanthemums that centered the altar decorations. Four seven-branched candelabra holding lighted tapers flanked the flower arrangements. Single lighted tapers were placed in the windows and used to mark the family pews. Mrs. J. T. Collier, organist, and Miss Sharon Donahue, soloist, presented the nuptial music. Miss Donahue sang “More” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” Mr. Westberry gave his daughter in marriage. She wore a gown of white crepe with an empire waistline accented with French Alencon lace embroidered with seed pearls and brilliants. The detachable train was edged with matching embroidered lace fell from the shoulders. Her two-tiered bouffant veil of silk illusion was attached to a lace crown appliquéd with stephanotis and ivy. Miss Cathy Bennett was maid of honor. She wore a floor length sheath dress of rose crepe with a matching French bow holding a circlet of net for her headpiece. She carried a single American Beauty Rose. Mrs. Joan Westberry and Mrs. Hazel Westberry, sisters-in-law of the bride; and her sisters, Mrs. Audrey Beaver of Atlanta and Mrs. Pauline Elliott were bridesmaids. Their light crepe gowns and headpieces were styled like those of the honor attendant. They carried similar flowers. Angie Beaver, the bride’s niece from Atlanta was flower girl. She wore white silk organza with pink embroidery and carried a white basket of rose petals. Michael Westberry, the bride’s nephew, was ring bearer. Billy Cooksey of National City, Calif. was his brother’s best man. Ushers were Jimmy Fennell and David Harrelson. For her daughter’s wedding, Mrs. Westberry chose a dress of pink lace with matching jacket and beige accessories. Her corsage was of pink glamellias The bridegroom’s mother wore a blue lace dress with a matching jacket. Her accessories were beige and her corsage was of blue glamellias. The bride’s parents entertained at a reception in the social hall of the church immediately after the ceremony. Red, pink and white roses and chrysanthemums were used in decoration. The bride’s table was covered with pink linen overlaid with a hand-made lace cloth. The all white tiered wedding cake was topped with a cluster of wedding bells. Mrs. Millard Mattie and Mrs. Linda Rinehart cut the cake and Mrs. Patsy Fennell presided at the punch bowl. Mrs. Carolyn Westberry kept the bride’s book.
