John Bennett

Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia.
John Bennett, prominent citizen in his day of Appling County, was born in Bryan County, July 30, 1807, a son of Henry Bennett. His wife, Lucy Harris, was born in 1805 in North Carolina.
Mr. Bennett served in the Indian War in Capt. James A. Sweat’s company of Ware county militia, June 9th to Aug. 10, 1838, and was 4th Corporal in Capt. N. J. Halton’s company of Appling County militia Oct. 6th, 1838, to Jan. 16, 1839. He served as militia captain in the 583rd district, Appling County, 1845-1850, and was Justice of Peace in the same district 1837-1841 and 1842-1851. He served as State Senator from the 3rd district, 1863-1865.
John Bennett lived in the 3rd land district of Appling County in the portion annexed about 1870 to Wayne County. He died there Jan. 27, 1887, and his wife died April 17, 1889. They were buried in the Odum town cemetery.
