Hand Book of Texas

“The Tyler-Palestine Road, which passed through Teaselville, ran from Tyler to the El Camino Real (see OLD SAN ANTONIO ROAD) and was the first public road planned by the County Commissioners Court. The community was, therefore, fairly accessible to early settlers. It was sometimes called Loftin for a prominent local family. With the advent of the Smith County railroad system in the 1870s, the community failed to prosper. The nearest line went through nearby Bullard, so goods and produce were sent there for shipping. The Lee Spring Baptist Church was organized nearby by 1892, and in 1900 the settlement was granted a post office called Loftin, with Albert Westberry as postmaster. The post office closed sometime before 1935.”

Albert is listed in the Texas death index as Albert Westbury, DC # 667

  1. I have been doing research on the family of Francis John and Mary Leigh Chapman for about 50 years and I do not disagree with those who have Caleb Westberry as the first husband of Keziah Chapman, however I have yet to see Caleb’s name on any document. I do not find it on find-a-grave. His name is not listed anywhere that I can find as a child of Rev Moses. No marriage, no death or other records. The only Caleb that I find is the grandson of Rev Moses and son of Noah Sr. It would seem that Albert would named one of his sons “Caleb” if this was his father’s name.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
    Sincerely,
Lamar Chapman, 2nd great grand son of Francis John and Mary Leigh Chapman

    1. I have the info you are requesting. Caleb’s on Albert died in Texas Jan 12 1921. His death certificate is as follows: Name: Albert Westbury Birth Date: 13 Oct 1834 Birth Place: Georgia Father: Caleb Westbury Mother: Kishia C Tayman Age at Death: 86 Death Date: 12 Jan 1921 Death Place: Gainesville, Cooke, Texas, USA. I have a copy of the d/c along with most of Albert’s children’s birth and death certificates. Probably the only proof (and its not proof) that Caleb was the son of Moses is Keziah and Albert living in Liberty County, Georgia in 1850 and of course her father’s will. Liberty County is probably the only proof.
